Michael Jenkins – Biography

COMING FROM A BACKGROUND OF CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN WHERE CUTTING EDGE ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN ARE EMBRACED WITH AN APPRECIATION OF ENERGY AND UNDERSTANDING FOR DETAIL, SO TOO IS MICHAEL’S ATTITUDE TOWARDS HIS ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS.

A NATURAL AFFINITY WITH THE NOTION OF MATERIAL RECYCLING WITH A MIX OF ARTISTIC SKILL AND IMAGINATION HAS SEEN MICHAEL, CREATE AN ASSEMBLAGE OF MOVEMENT AND TEXTURES FROM SALVAGED PIECES INTO PLEASING AESTHETIC ARTWORKS THAT FORM THE SUBSTANCE OF BOTH HIS MANY COMMISSIONED WORKS AND HIS ONGOING EXHIBITION SCHEDULE.

EACH WORK IS OFTEN A UNIQUE HISTORICAL EXPRESSION, BE IT FROM RECONSTRUCTED ROAD SIGNS, BALINESE NUMBER PLATES, BEACH BATHING BOX TIMBER, WORLD WAR II ARTILLERY BOXES OR RECYCLED BUILDING MATERIALS .

JENKINS:  “THE ARTWORK IS ALL ABOUT MY INTIMATE CREATIVE VISUAL PERCEPTION.  THE SIGNAGE PIECES REMIND ME OF PROTEST SONGS FROM THE 70’S.  THE SIGN SAYS YOU HAVE TO HAVE A MEMBERSHIP CARD TO GET INSIDE.  BY CUTTING THE SIGN, I CHALLENGE THAT NOTION.  I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED WITH THE PROSPECT OF PRESENTING MY WORK TO THE PUBLIC AND RECIEVING THAT REPONSE AND HAVING THOSE EXHIBITIONS WHILST EXPLORING THE VULNERABILITY OF PUTTING MY CREATIVE ZONE ON SHOW”. OFTEN DESTRUCTING A SINGLE SIGNAGE, MICHAEL CHALLENGES AND REINTERPRETS THE MESSAGE INTO A REFRESHING NEW ARTFORM.

DRAWING ON INFLUENCES FROM HOWARD ARKLEY’S UTILISATION OF VIVID COLOURS AND PATTERNS, ROSALIE GASCOIGNE’S VISION OF ALTERNATIVE MATERIAL USE AND JOHN DAHLSON’S BELIEF THAT, WITH IMAGINATION, ART CAN TAKE MANY DIRECTIONS, JENKINS TAKES HIS IMAGINATIVE DESIGN INTO EXCITING NEW ARTISTIC ENDEVOURS.

SINCE MICHAEL’S FIRST EXHIBITION SOME 3-4 YEARS AGO HE HAS NOW HAD HIS WORK SHOWN IN OVER 30+ EXHIBITIONS AND IS NOW REPRESENTED IN GALLERIES NATIONWIDE.  MICHAEL’S LIFELONG PASSION FOR SURFING AND TRAVEL TO INTERESTING DESTINATIONS IS ALSO REFLECTED IN MUCH OF HIS WORK, FROM THE SUBJECTS AND COLOURS TO THE TEXTURES AND MATERIALS THEY ALL REPRESENT ASPECTS OF HIS EMBRACING THE MODERN WORLD AND THAT OF A BYGONE ERA.

THE PALETTE AND PATINA OF JENKINS VISION CAPTURES THE IMAGINATION AND FIRES THE SPIRIT OF A PASSIONATE VISUAL JOURNEY TO PROVOKE THOUGHTS BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF CONVENTIONAL ART
